High school females now drink and binge drink (consuming 4-5 or more drinks in a row) alcohol at higher rates than high school males, according to recent CDC data.
While alcohol use among high school students has generally decreased in the past two decades, use by females hasn’t dropped proportionately, which is a concerning trend.
Underage alcohol use, especially binge drinking, increases serious short-term health risks for youth and those around them, from:
- Traffic crashes
- Involvement as perpetrator or victim in assaults and other crimes
- Injuries from falls, burns, drownings and other causes.
Long-term risks include the possibility of cognitive impairment and an increased likelihood of developing an alcohol use disorder later in life.
